Sri Lanka is officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon. It was once known as Serendib, a name used by the Arabs and Persians, derived from Serendip, a Persian word. Serendib is the root of the word serendipity.
Its area is 65,610 km2, geographically separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is its legislative capital, and Colombo is its largest city and centre of commerce.
The bird diversity of Sri Lanka is rich; its list is more than 450 bird species of which 34 endemics, 238 resident breeders and 216 migratory species.
The Serendib Scops Owl was only recently discovered in Sri Lanka and only in 2004 when it was officially described.
We managed to see all the 34 endemics of the Island in this 11-day trip. The endemics are highlighted in red font in this report.
