Itinerary:

Day 1: Meet and greet at the airport and transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Birdwatching at Al Shaheed Park and KISR Outfall

After breakfast, we head to Al Shaheed Park, a rich urban green space with water pools, reedbeds, and expansive lawns that host abundant White-eared Bulbuls, Laughing Doves, and Eurasian Collared Doves. Our birdwatching begins at the reedbeds, where our primary targets are Moustached Warbler and Clamorous Reed Warbler, both of which thrive in this habitat. These wetlands offer excellent chances to observe their behaviour up close.
From here, we walk west through the park, an area known for species such as Masked Shrike, Isabelline Shrike, Barred Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Common Whitethroat, Indian Silverbill, and Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin. Near another reed-fringed pool, we often encounter White-throated Kingfisher, Common Reed Warbler, and Little Bittern.
The surrounding lawns provide further opportunities, with Eurasian Hoopoe and Bluethroat frequently present, and Common Nightingale occasionally seen feeding openly. With luck, we may also encounter Purple Sunbird, now a regular annual visitor to the park.
Because the park is close to our hotel, we may return at dusk to explore its nocturnal life. Here, Pallid Scops Owls can sometimes be seen dropping to the ground to hunt crickets—always a memorable end to a day’s birding.
We then continue to the KISR Waterfall to look for the Hypocolius roost. Flocks of Hypocolius typically fly overhead and settle on palm trees to feed on dates, arriving from multiple directions and filling the area with their soft calls.
Our final stop is the nearby coastline, where we search for waders and coastal species including Western Reef Heron, Greater Sand Plover, Armenian, Steppe, and Heuglin’s Gull, and the local breeder Slender-billed Gull, which is outnumbered in winter by Black-headed Gull. Hundreds of Greater Flamingos are commonly present, and with luck we may detect a Lesser Flamingo among them. If the tide is favourable, we may also visit the Sulaibikhat Traditional Café coast to look for Terek Sandpiper, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Black-crowned Night Heron, and Crab-plover.

Day 3: Jahra Reserve and Mutla’a Ranch

The renowned Jahra Reserve, often referred to as Jahra Pools Reserve, is one of Kuwait’s most important wetlands and an excellent destination for a full-day birding excursion. Many visitors choose to explore specific areas in depth and return several times during their stay. The reserve regularly hosts species such as Delicate Prinia, Clamorous Reed Warbler, Moustached Warbler, Mountain Chiffchaff (almost annual), Penduline Tit, Little Crake, Little Bittern, Pallid Swift, Namaqua Dove, and Black-winged Kite. Several lapwing species—including White-tailed, Spur-winged, and Red-wattled Lapwing—are also frequently encountered. White-throated Kingfisher is common, while Pied Kingfisher and Blue-cheeked or European Bee-eaters appear occasionally, though not every year.

Greater Spotted Eagle is a regular wintering species, easily observed both perched and in flight. In November, migrating or overwintering Steppe Eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle, and Steppe Buzzard may also be seen. The vivid Grey-headed Swamphen is typically found along reedbeds, while waterbodies support Little Grebe, Ferruginous Duck, Black-necked Grebe, and other common duck species. Waders such as Western Great Egret, Little Egret, Western Reef Heron, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Terek Sandpiper, Temminck’s Stint, and Marsh Sandpiper are widespread. Raptors like Pallid Harrier are often present, and passerines including Siberian Stonechat (hemprichii), European Stonechat, Citrine Wagtail, and Water Pipit (coutellii) are expected. Though rare, Crested Honey Buzzard is occasionally recorded.

After completing our visit, we continue to Mutla’a Ranch, a farm with open grassy areas, trees, and date palms known for hosting wintering species and rarities such as Indian Roller, Shikra, and Crested Honey Buzzard, though these are not guaranteed annually. We then proceed to Liyah Reserve, a productive site for larks, Asian Desert Warbler, and various wheatears.

Day 4: Jahra Farms, Al Judayliat and Jal Al Zor

Today we begin at Jahra Farms in search of Bank Mynas, a species now well established in the area. The farms host a variety of winter visitors, including Water Pipit, Tree Pipit, and several shrikes such as Red-backed, Masked, and Isabelline Shrike. Raptors are often present too, with Shikra and Crested Honey Buzzard occasionally seen patrolling the groves. White-throated Kingfisher is a common resident here, and in some winters we may encounter Olive-backed Pipit or Indian Roller.

We then continue to Al Judailiyat, effectively an eastern extension of Jahra Reserve. This area consists of dense native and non-native tamarisk stands mixed with Nitraria retusa bushes, which provide ideal winter cover for Menetries’s Warbler, a secretive species that often remains hidden within the shrubs. Large eagles are regular here, with Greater Spotted Eagle frequently seen perched on the ground or tamarisk trees, while Steppe Eagle and Eastern Imperial Eagle occur in smaller numbers.

Along the nearby shoreline, a medium tide can reveal an excellent assortment of waders, flamingos, and gulls. Notable species include Broad-billed Sandpiper, Terek Sandpiper, Tibetan Sand Plover, and Greater Sand Plover.

Our final stop is Jal Al Zor, a landscape of rocky ridges and slopes that supports several specialist wheatears such as Red-tailed Wheatear, Mourning Wheatear, and White-capped Wheatear. The flatter areas hold Desert Wheatear and Isabelline Wheatear, and with luck we may also encounter Little Owl (ssp. lilith) or the impressive Pharaoh Eagle-Owl before concluding the day.

Day 5: Abu Al Hasaniya and Julai’a

At Abu Hasaniya, we expect excellent views of Lesser Crested Tern and Greater Crested Tern, often seen side by side—perfect for size comparison and improving identification skills. The shoreline typically hosts Greater Sand Plovers, Sanderlings, and a variety of gulls.

We then continue to Julai’a, a coastal shrubby area where we search for Asian Desert Warbler and Menetries’s Warbler, both of which favour low desert scrub. This site can also produce several shrike species, and Namaqua Dove is occasionally seen. Julai’a holds a breeding colony of Afghan Babbler, and although winter can make them slightly less easy to find, we will make every effort to locate them. Desert Finch also breeds here, though it becomes more challenging to find during winter.

After exploring the area, we head to a nearby hill to look for Finsch’s Wheatear along with other wintering wheatear species.

On our return to Kuwait City, we may stop at Ahmadi—time permitting—to search for wintering Crested Honey Buzzards, which have become regular seasonal visitors to this district.

Day 6: Abdaly Farms and Liyah Reserve

We begin with a long drive north—slightly over an hour—to Abdaly Farms, where we will try to locate the Afghan Babbler. This area may also offer chances to see Indian Roller, Shikra, and Delicate Prinia, especially if we have not already encountered them earlier in the trip.

We then continue to Liyah Reserve, a productive desert site known for Greater Hoopoe-Lark, Bar-tailed Lark, and various wheatears.

Our journey then takes us south to Doha Spur, where we search for any waders, gulls, and terns we may have missed. Key targets include Pallas’s Gull, Armenian Gull, Heuglin’s Gull, and Steppe Gull, along with Broad-billed Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, Terek Sandpiper, Tibetan Sand Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Crab-plover, Western Reef Heron, and Western Great Egret.

Day 7: Abraq Al-Habari and United Poultry Pivot Fields

We begin with a one-hour drive to the oasis of Abraq Al-Habari Farm, a well-known hotspot for wintering birds and regional rarities. Here we search for Hume’s Leaf Warbler, Shikra, and Pallid Scops Owl, along with the possibility of encountering unexpected vagrants that frequently turn up at this site. Raptors are a regular feature of the area, and we may see Steppe Eagle, Pallid Harrier, and Eastern Imperial Eagle circling overhead or descending to drink at the farm’s water sources.

Afterwards, we continue to the United Poultry Pivot Fields, where we explore the open agricultural plots for pipits and larks. Species such as Oriental Skylark, Turkestan Short-toed Lark, and Greater Short-toed Lark are all possible here, Black-winged Kite and Pallid Harriers are often seen quartering low over the fields in search of prey.

Day 8: Kabd Reserve and Sulaibiya Pivot Fields

In the morning, we drive to Kabd Reserve, an excellent site for Finsch’s Wheatear and Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark. Other regular species include Desert Wheatear, Isabelline Wheatear, Ménétries’s Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Asian Desert Warbler, and occasionally Hypocolius. The surrounding desert often holds Greater Short-toed Lark, Isabelline Shrike, and Steppe Grey Shrike, and we will also search the open areas between the farms for additional lark species. Raptors such as Short-toed Eagle and Pallid Harrier may also be encountered.

We then continue to Sulaibiya Pivot Fields, a productive wintering area. Here we look for Indian Roller, as well as Red-wattled Lapwing, Sociable Lapwing, Buff-bellied Pipit, and Richard’s Pipit. Isabelline and Steppe Grey Shrikes are common throughout the fields, while raptors including Black-winged Kite, Steppe Buzzard, Long-legged Buzzard, and Short-toed Eagle are frequent. Larger eagles such as Eastern Imperial, Steppe Eagle, and Greater Spotted Eagle are also regularly seen in this area.
